The Tokyo Metropolis government is set to host a special exhibition celebrating the city’s historic craftsmanship and long-established brands. The Edo Tokyo Kirari Project’s EDO TOKYO TIMELESS Exhibition will take place from 7-9 March 2025 at Wakeijuku in Bunkyo-ku, once the residence of Marquis Hosokawa.

The exhibition aims to showcase Tokyo’s traditional industries and artisans by combining heritage with modern innovation. A total of 39 model businesses will participate, demonstrating their expertise in Edo-period craftsmanship across food, clothing, and homeware. Visitors will have the chance to see, experience, and even purchase products that reflect the timeless skills of Tokyo’s artisans.

Blending Tradition with Modern Design

The Edo Tokyo Kirari Project is a long-running initiative designed to revitalise and promote Tokyo’s historic industries. Under the theme “Old meets New”, the project reinterprets traditional techniques and crafts, adapting them for contemporary audiences both in Japan and abroad.

The exhibition will feature hands-on workshops, allowing visitors to try their hand at traditional crafts such as Kumiko woodwork and Kumihimo braiding—skills that have been passed down through generations. A highlight of the event will be the special collection of collaborative products created with Parisian designers, previously showcased at the Maison&Objet Paris trade fair. These unique pieces demonstrate how Tokyo’s historical craftsmanship continues to evolve and find new audiences worldwide.

A Unique Cultural Experience at Wakeijuku

Wakeijuku, the exhibition venue, provides a fitting backdrop for the event. As the former home of Marquis Hosokawa, the setting reflects the rich heritage that the Edo Tokyo Kirari Project seeks to preserve. The event will be open daily from 10:00 to 17:00, with closing time at 16:00 on the final day.

Admission is free, though some workshops may require a participation fee. Organisers have advised attendees to use public transport, as no parking facilities will be available.

Visitors can look forward to a blend of history, artistry, and innovation, celebrating the enduring appeal of Tokyo’s time-honoured brands.
