Bradford Cox Atlas Sound live return set for Philadelphia festival

Bradford Cox Atlas Sound live

Bradford Cox Atlas Sound live dates are rarely announced, so when one surfaces, it lands differently. Cox is booked to perform as Atlas Sound at Making Time ∞ festival in Philadelphia this September, marking what appears to be his first proper festival appearance in roughly six years.

Bradford Cox Atlas Sound live at Fort Mifflin

The Philadelphia weekender runs from 18 to 20 September at Fort Mifflin, and Atlas Sound is slotted for 4:30pm on the Sunday. It is a low-key billing for someone whose music has cast a long shadow over a certain strain of American guitar and bedroom-recording culture, but then Cox has rarely done things the expected way.

The last time either Deerhunter or Atlas Sound were active in any sustained sense was 2019. That year, Deerhunter released Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared?, and Atlas Sound played a one-off set at Desert Daze. Since then, both projects appear to have been on what the report characterises as unannounced hiatuses. The only blip in the silence came in 2023, when Cox reportedly played a seemingly ad hoc noise set at a vintage market in Georgia, the kind of low-profile, almost accidental gig that suits an artist who has always operated slightly outside conventional tour-cycle logic.

No details about recent recording activity or future plans have been forthcoming from Cox’s camp.

A long silence broken

To understand why this booking matters to people who follow the post-punk and dream-pop end of independent music, it helps to remember what Cox represented at his most prolific. Running 4AD-signed Deerhunter alongside the solo Atlas Sound project simultaneously, he was producing some of the more inventive guitar-adjacent records of the late 2000s and early 2010s. Atlas Sound in particular carried a rawer, more solitary quality than Deerhunter’s full-band recordings, built around layered loops and a kind of woozy melodic instinct.

The 2019 stretch felt like a genuine ending rather than a pause. Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared? arrived with little fanfare relative to earlier albums in the Deerhunter catalogue, and the Desert Daze set for Atlas Sound read more like a full stop than a tease. The Gucci runway walk the same year added a surreal coda to a period that already felt like it was closing a chapter.

Six years is a long time in live music. The independent festival circuit has shifted considerably, booking agents have turned over, and a generation of acts that once opened for Deerhunter have now headlined their own UK and European tours. Cox stepping back into that world via a Sunday afternoon slot at a Philadelphia weekender rather than a headline return is, if anything, the move that makes most sense for an artist who has always resisted the pressure of the comeback narrative.

Making Time ∞ is the vehicle here. The festival has built a reputation around left-field bookings, and an Atlas Sound set at 4:30pm on a Sunday fits that sensibility rather than the arena-rock pageant of a more conventional reunion show.

Atlas Sound plays Making Time ∞ at Fort Mifflin, Philadelphia, on 20 September at 4:30pm. The full festival runs 18 to 20 September. Details via Pitchfork, which first reported the booking.
