Lil Durk murder-for-hire trial

A federal jury has found Lil Durk not guilty in the Lil Durk murder-for-hire trial, clearing him of charges that he conspired to kill Georgia rapper Quando Rondo. The verdict comes after a case built almost entirely on the testimony of Durk’s own associates, several of whom had pleaded guilty as co-defendants in exchange for co-operation with the government.

What the prosecution alleged in the Lil Durk murder-for-hire trial

Prosecutors argued that Durk, a Grammy winner, worked alongside five men connected to his Only the Family (OTF) collective to orchestrate a hit on Quando Rondo, born Tyquian Bowman. The alleged motive was revenge: Bowman had been linked to the 2020 murder of Durk’s friend King Von. Timothy ‘Lul Timm’ Leeks, described by prosecutors as ‘an associate’ of Bowman’s, was later charged with killing Von, though those charges were eventually dropped.

Kavon Grant, known as OTF Vonnie, alleged that Durk had promised cash for Bowman’s murder. Kacey Hester, known as OTF Jam, testified that he was among those who trailed Bowman before ambushing him at a petrol station. That attack did not reach its intended target: Bowman’s cousin, Saviay’a Tilal ‘Lul Pab’ Robinson, was shot and killed instead. ‘It’s Durk’s fault,’ Hester told the court. ‘Durk put us in the situation.’

Durk consistently denied all charges throughout the proceedings.

The lyrics debate and the defence

One of the most contested elements of the case was the prosecution’s attempt to use Durk’s own lyrics as evidence, a tactic that has drawn sustained criticism from artists and First Amendment advocates across the United States. Judge Michael W. Fitzgerald eventually ruled that some lyrics referencing Durk’s state of mind following King Von’s death could be admitted, though the broader use of rap lyrics in criminal prosecutions remains a live and deeply contentious legal debate.

Durk’s defence team, which included Brian Steel (who represented Young Thug during the YSL trial), pushed back hard on the government’s case. Steel’s team argued that Grant was in fact the architect of the shooting, not Durk, and that the witnesses who testified against their client were cooperators with strong personal incentives to avoid life sentences rather than credible sources of truth. The jury ultimately found that framing persuasive.

Arrest in Miami and what comes next

According to Biography.com, Durk was arrested in October 2024 in Miami while attempting to leave the country, a detail that underlines the federal government’s determination to bring the case to trial. He has been in federal custody since that arrest.

The acquittal does not mean Durk walks free. He remains in custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles, pending a second trial on racketeering charges, also according to Biography.com. That case represents a separate and substantial legal exposure, and it is where prosecutors’ attention now turns.

The Lil Durk murder-for-hire trial had drawn attention well beyond the usual true-crime coverage, in part because of what it revealed about the use of rap lyrics as courtroom evidence. Prosecutors sought to have Durk’s own words used against him in a pattern that artists’ rights groups have long argued criminalises artistic expression rather than actual conduct. The partial admission of lyrics by Judge Fitzgerald kept that tension alive throughout the trial, even if the jury’s verdict does not resolve it.

The OTF collective, the network of associates whose testimony formed the spine of the government’s case, is now central to what happens next. With the racketeering trial still ahead, the question of how much weight co-operating witnesses carry will be tested again in a federal courtroom. Pitchfork first reported the acquittal. The Lil Durk murder-for-hire trial verdict was delivered by a federal jury, with Durk’s legal team having argued throughout that the prosecution’s case rested on testimony from men desperate to reduce their own sentences.
