Ye Chicago Homecoming Show Brings Out Twista, Big Sean and Future at Soldier Field

Ye Chicago homecoming show

The Ye Chicago homecoming show landed at Soldier Field last night, with the rapper returning to his birth city for the first time since 2021 and pulling out a marathon set of old hits alongside a run of local and national guest appearances. The night carried genuine weight: this is an artist who has spent months navigating international bans, tour cancellations, and allegations surrounding his latest record, Bully, and whose path back to the stage has been anything but straightforward.

Twista, Big Sean and the Guest List That Made Chicago Shout

If there was a single moment that fired up the home crowd, it came when Ye brought out Twista, one of the Windy City’s own, to perform their collaborations. The pair ran through ‘Overnight Celebrity’, which appeared on Twista’s 2004 LP Kamikaze, and ‘Slow Jamz’ from The College Dropout. Both tracks belong to the earliest chapter of Ye’s career, and hearing them back in Chicago, with the artist who helped build them, carried a different kind of charge than any of the bigger-name cameos.

Big Sean was also in the building. Ye signed him to his G.O.O.D. Music label in 2007, though the two later had a falling-out, and their appearance together still carried a certain loaded history. They performed their 2012 track ‘Clique’ before Big Sean took a solo turn on ‘IDFWU’. 2 Chainz then joined both of them for ‘Mercy’ and ‘Birthday Song’. Later in the set, Future came out for ‘Keep It Burnin’ and ‘Fuck Up Some Commas’, closing out the guest section before Ye moved into the final run of the night.

Andre Troutman appeared several times across the set, joining Ye on ‘Say You Will’, ‘Heartless’, ‘All the Love’, and ‘Stronger’. The full setlist stretched to well over thirty tracks, spanning the breadth of Ye’s catalogue from The College Dropout through to more recent material, taking in ‘Runaway’, ‘All of the Lights’, ‘Gold Digger’, ‘Black Skinhead’, and ‘Ghost Town’ along the way.

The Ye Chicago Homecoming Show in Context: Bans, Cancellations and a Zero-Tolerance Venue

The homecoming did not arrive without context. Audacy reported that Soldier Field enforced a ‘zero tolerance’ policy for anti-Jewish comments during Ye’s Chicago shows, a measure that speaks directly to the controversy that has trailed this tour.

A number of international dates have been cancelled because of Ye’s history of antisemitic remarks, including planned shows in London, Marseille, Prague, and Chorzów, Poland. The London cancellation was the most high-profile. The Times of Israel reported that the UK government blocked Ye from entering the country, leading directly to the cancellation of the London festival he had been set to headline. British government minister Wes Streeting told UK broadcasters that he regarded West using his bipolar disorder ‘to justify his actions’ as ‘appalling’.

The BBC reported that the Community Security Trust, which works to protect British Jews from antisemitism, described the government’s decision as ‘a sensible outcome to what has been yet another bruising episode for British Jews’. That framing gives you a clear sense of the climate in which this entire tour has operated.

Stateside, Ye put on his first US show in five years at Soldier Field‘s Los Angeles equivalent, SoFi Stadium, in April, and has since played Tampa, San Antonio, and New Orleans on his way back to a full touring schedule. The Chicago run, two nights at Soldier Field, is the homecoming chapter of that slow, complicated return. Night two follows tonight.
