Richard Lloyd cancer diagnosis: Television co-founder fights bile duct disease

Richard Lloyd cancer diagnosis

Richard Lloyd cancer diagnosis has prompted an urgent crowdfunding appeal after the co-founding guitarist of Television was found to have cholangiocarcinoma in March, a rare and aggressive bile duct cancer that, according to USA Today, affects about 8,000 people in the US each year.

The campaign was announced on Television’s social media pages by Sean Seymour, one of Lloyd’s bandmates in the Richard Lloyd Group. Lloyd is 74. Since his diagnosis, he has survived two bouts of sepsis and seven visits to the intensive care unit.

A tumour that cannot be removed

Seymour’s campaign statement describes the situation in stark terms. One tumour in Lloyd’s liver is, in his words, ‘dangerously close to a major blood vessel,’ making surgical removal unsafe. Lloyd is unable to tour. His wife, Sheila, has stepped away from her own life to work as his full-time caregiver, a role that brings its own compounding financial pressure on top of mounting medical costs.

The GoFundMe campaign is the family’s direct appeal for public support. Lloyd himself provided a statement to the page that is, characteristically, more measured than despairing.

‘I am usually a pretty upbeat person and I am taking this in stride,’ he wrote, ‘but it has become very difficult on our own and financially we are strapped. That’s why I’m asking for your help. If you can see your way clear to make a donation please do that. Otherwise, please pass it around to your friends that might help and people that know me.’

Richard Lloyd cancer diagnosis lands in the shadow of Marquee Moon

It is impossible to write about this without acknowledging what Lloyd built. Television’s 1977 debut Marquee Moon remains one of the few records that genuinely changed what guitar music could do. Those interlocking lines Lloyd traded with Tom Verlaine weren’t just a technique; they were a whole new set of instructions for how two guitars could share the same space without either one blinking. Post-punk, art-rock, the entire lineage of angular guitar bands that followed across New York, London, Manchester: a credible argument runs through that album for a huge amount of what came after.

Cholangiocarcinoma is a cancer of the bile ducts, and it is not a diagnosis that comes with easy options. The disease is difficult to detect early, tends to be caught at an advanced stage, and the proximity of Lloyd’s tumour to a major blood vessel rules out the surgical route that would otherwise offer the clearest path forward. The 8,000 annual US cases cited by USA Today underline how relatively rare it is, which also means research funding and treatment development lag behind more prevalent cancers.

The Richard Lloyd cancer diagnosis comes at a point where he cannot work, cannot tour, and is dependent on his wife’s full-time care and whatever the public can contribute. The crowdfunding campaign is not presented as a final resort so much as a practical acknowledgement of a situation that has already put the family under serious financial strain, with seven ICU admissions and the ongoing cost of care that a working musician without institutional backing simply cannot absorb.

Lloyd’s ask is modest in tone, if not in need. He is not demanding; he is requesting. And for anyone who grew up on Marquee Moon, or who found it later and felt that jolt of recognition that a genuinely original record delivers, the campaign page is worth thirty seconds of your time.
