M83 I Wrote You a Letter: New Album Due September on Other Suns

M83 I Wrote You a Letter

Anthony Gonzalez has announced M83 I Wrote You a Letter, a new album set for release on 25 September via his own Other Suns label, with lead single ‘Blister Sunrise’ available to hear now. The record arrives as the follow-up to 2023’s Fantasy, and it marks a proper full-length statement from Gonzalez after a period largely spent in soundtrack territory.

According to Consequence, I Wrote You a Letter is M83’s first new album since Fantasy, and it represents Gonzalez’s first major release on Other Suns beyond his 2025 soundtrack A Necessary Escape, made for the film Dakar Chronicles. Other Suns is Other Suns, Gonzalez’s own label, meaning this one lands without a major behind it, a point worth noting for anyone watching how artists are repositioning themselves outside the usual infrastructure.

M83 I Wrote You a Letter: Who Made It and How

Gonzalez made the album alongside collaborators Joe Berry, Clément Libes, and Benoit de Villeneuve. Berry, per Release Wave, is Gonzalez’s longtime bandmate and a fixture of the M83 live lineup, which gives the project a continuity of personnel that the Fantasy era fans will recognise. Gonzalez announced the record via Instagram, promising further information shortly. He kept the post characteristically spare: names of collaborators, a confirmation that more is coming, and the single.

‘Blister Sunrise’ is the opening track, and it sets the tone for what Gonzalez appears to be building here. The tracklist runs nine songs deep, a concise set by M83 standards, with titles like ‘Siren / Behold… Beasts’, ‘Soldiers of Lust’, and ‘Traces of Love’ hinting at the kind of wide-screen emotional terrain the project has always occupied. ‘Aged’, ‘Losing Ground’, ‘Heart Motion Foto’, ‘Feeding Time’, there’s a sense of accumulation in the sequencing, of something being assembled piece by piece rather than announced all at once.

From Fantasy to a New Chapter on Other Suns

Fantasy, released in 2023, was Gonzalez’s first album under the M83 name in six years, following 2016’s Junk. Since then, he has worked in soundtrack mode, with A Necessary Escape for Dakar Chronicles arriving in 2025. That project was also released on Other Suns, making it the label’s first outing. I Wrote You a Letter, then, is the first time the label hosts a full M83 studio record, a different proposition commercially and creatively.

The decision to stay on Other Suns for the album proper consolidates Gonzalez’s move toward operating independently. Whether that changes the reach of the release is an open question, but the appetite is there: Rough Trade is already stocking a £34.99 physical edition, which suggests at least some of the traditional retail infrastructure remains in play even without a major label push.

M83’s back catalogue has accrued a reputation that transcends any particular release cycle. Saturdays=Youth, the 2008 record, was ranked at number 12 in a list of the 30 best dream pop albums of all time, a placement that speaks to how Gonzalez’s earlier work has aged relative to the genre’s broader history. I Wrote You a Letter arrives into that context, carrying the weight of a project whose high-water marks are well established and whose audience tends to show up regardless of hype cycles.

The full tracklist for I Wrote You a Letter is: ‘Blister Sunrise’, ‘Opera’, ‘Siren / Behold… Beasts’, ‘Aged’, ‘Losing Ground’, ‘Soldiers of Lust’, ‘Heart Motion Foto’, ‘Feeding Time’, ‘Traces of Love’. The album is out on 25 September via Other Suns.
