Hayden Panettiere death South Carolina

Hayden Panettiere, whose death in South Carolina on 16 August has shocked fans and the entertainment world alike, was 36 years old. TMZ and The New York Times first reported the news, with her father, Skip Panettiere, confirming the loss in a public statement. No cause of death has been given.

Skip Panettiere said: ‘It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden. She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her and to the millions who watched her onscreen.’

The timeline of Hayden Panettiere’s death in South Carolina

According to WDBJ7, officers and EMS personnel responded at 1:51 p.m. to Judson Mill Lofts following a report of an unresponsive woman. Authorities confirmed that an acquaintance of Panettiere placed the 911 call. Entertainment Weekly reports that Panettiere was declared deceased at 2:32 p.m. local time on 16 August. An autopsy has been completed, WDBJ7 notes, though results have not yet been made public.

The address, Judson Mill Lofts, is a residential development in South Carolina. Beyond the timeline of the emergency response, authorities have released no further details about the circumstances surrounding her death.

From child star to Nashville and the Billboard charts

Panettiere came up through film as a child, with roles in Remember the Titans and Raising Helen among her early credits. The real breakout came in 2006, when she took the role of a cheerleader with superpowers in the TV show Heroes. Later, she appeared as Kirby Reed in the fourth and sixth instalments of the Scream franchise.

It was her role in Nashville (the country music drama that ran from 2012 to 2018) that defined much of her adult career. Playing rising country singer Juliette Barnes, she received two Golden Globe nominations for the performance. The show was, for its run, the sharpest fictional account of the music industry on television: its internal politics, the grind of touring, the way fame can corrode a person from the inside.

Panettiere released music under her own name as companion pieces to films she appeared in, and recorded further tracks as Juliette Barnes for the Nashville soundtrack. Among them was ‘Undermine,’ a duet with co-star Charles Esten. Several songs from the series reached the Billboard charts, a detail that often gets lost when the show is discussed primarily as drama rather than as a genuine music project.

Like Juliette Barnes, Panettiere was open about mental health struggles that ran alongside her professional life. That honesty, rare and often costly in the entertainment industry, gave her work on the show an added weight that its more straightforwardly glossy competitors could never quite manage.

Panettiere had spoken in interviews about the difficulties she faced during and after the show’s run. The character of Juliette Barnes was, in that sense, never entirely fictional. The overlap between the performer and the role gave her best scenes on Nashville something unscripted and raw about them.

Her father’s statement described her as ‘an incredible light’, and for anyone who followed her from the Heroes years through to Nashville‘s final season in 2018, that is not an overstatement. She was 36. The toxicology report, according to WDBJ7, is still pending, and a cause of death has not been established.
