Fontaines D.C. Dopamine Chamber: Fifth Album Out October on XL

Fontaines D.C. Dopamine Chamber

Fontaines D.C. Dopamine Chamber is confirmed for 16 October via XL Recordings, and the lead single ‘Marianne’ is already out in the world, arriving with a video directed by Dave Meyers. Fifth album. Eleven tracks. A band seemingly done with the view from the top of the mainstream.

What’s on Dopamine Chamber

According to Release Wave, the record contains 11 brand new tracks, all produced by James Ford, who also helmed its predecessor. Where Romance built the platform, this one sounds designed to interrogate it. The album’s stated premise: what does it mean to chase pleasure in a world that keeps getting darker? Not exactly easy listening, then.

‘Marianne’ is described as a song about escapism, drawing partial inspiration from the 2024 thriller series Ripley. The video was directed by Dave Meyers, the go-to collaborator for some of pop and hip-hop’s most attention-grabbing visuals. It sets a tone. If Romance was the band finding a bigger room, Dopamine Chamber sounds like Fontaines D.C. deliberately dimming the lights in it.

Grian Chatten on the writing of Fontaines D.C. Dopamine Chamber

Singer Grian Chatten wrote across Venice, Vienna, and Sicily in search of lyrical material, and what came back was not comfort. In a press release, he described the shift from Romance in terms that land somewhere between self-diagnosis and creative manifesto.

‘I think Romance was maybe 60 per cent human and 40 per cent corrupted by automation, and a loss of feeling,’ he said. ‘This one feels more like 60 per cent corrupted, the mask is wearing the face a little more. I felt it would be more powerful to leave the hope out and reflect the ugliness honestly. This one needed to feel more like a catastrophic warning.’

That framing matters. Chatten isn’t romanticising decay as an aesthetic posture; he’s treating it as a journalistic brief. Strip the hope, name the thing clearly. Whether the record delivers on that stated intent is a question for October.

Where Romance left them

Romance was certified platinum and gave Fontaines D.C. mainstream crossover moments in ‘Favourite’ and ‘Starburster’. It also earned a Grammy nomination, as Brooklyn Vegan notes. For a post-punk band built on literary street-level language and a commitment to Dublin’s margins, that trajectory could have been a trap. The temptation to keep chasing the chart positions. To smooth things out. To lean into the anthems.

Everything about Dopamine Chamber suggests they are doing the opposite. ‘Catastrophic warning’ doesn’t leave much room for crossover manoeuvring. The album title itself is a provocation: pleasure as trap, dopamine as a kind of captivity.

BBC session and the run-up to release

The band also played a BBC session at Maida Vale on 31 July, a room that carries its own weight for British music history, with the recordings from that session likely to surface in the months ahead. It fits the pattern: Fontaines D.C. doing the work in spaces that matter, not just in algorithm-friendly formats.

James Ford’s production credit across both Romance and now Dopamine Chamber suggests a genuine working relationship rather than a one-record collaboration. Ford has form shaping records that sound vast without losing intimacy, and Chatten’s stated intention to let ugliness sit unresolved gives him plenty to work with.

Dopamine Chamber lands 16 October. ‘Marianne’ is out now.
