Columbia House Shutting Down After 71 Years of Mail-Order Music

Columbia House shutting down

Columbia House is shutting down for good, with the 71-year-old mail-order club set to stop accepting new orders on 15 September 2026. A message posted to Columbia House‘s own website confirmed the news: ‘After 9/15/26, The Columbia House will no longer be accepting new orders. You can still purchase books with your credit card or credits as normal.’ The announcement was first spotted by YouTube channel Channel 33 RPM and subsequently written up by Cord Cutter News.

From Record Club to DVD Catalogue: Columbia House Shutting Down Its Last Operation

Founded in 1955 as Columbia Record Club, the company was set up by its namesake music label to get albums into the hands of consumers in hard-to-reach areas. The pitch was simple and immediately seductive: a bundle of LPs for next to nothing upfront, in exchange for a commitment to buy more releases at full price further down the line. It was a model that, for decades, worked extraordinarily well.

At its peak in 1996, the club boasted 16 million members, driven in large part by a relentless advertising campaign. The commercials are lodged in the memory of anyone who grew up watching American television, including one soundtracked by what sounds unmistakably like the voice behind the Full House theme.

The music side of things did not last. According to NPR, Columbia House abandoned music entirely in 2010 to concentrate on DVDs, well before the company filed for bankruptcy in 2015. The bankruptcy marked the formal end of its CD operation, but the DVD catalogue limped on, and, apparently, so did a book-selling arm that remained active right up until this final closure notice.

Negative Option Billing and a Reputation for Shady Tactics

Columbia House’s longevity was never matched by its reputation for transparency. The company was persistently criticised for negative option billing, a practice where customers continued to be charged after signing up unless they actively wrote in to cancel. It is the kind of model that consumer advocates have spent years pushing back against, and one that left a lasting bad taste even among people who genuinely loved getting a stack of CDs for a penny.

Ownership of the club changed hands several times over the decades, each transfer doing little to modernise the underlying business. By the time music streaming made physical media feel like a curiosity rather than a necessity, Columbia House was already a shadow of what it had been at its mid-nineties height. The bankruptcy filing in 2015 was less a shock than an overdue reckoning.

What is almost poignant about the final shutdown notice is how low-key it reads. No farewell campaign, no archival celebration of 71 years of operation. Just a short message on a website most people had long since stopped visiting, confirming that the last orders will be taken on 15 September 2026. After that, the books stop too.

Columbia House had not commented further at the time of writing.
