Rising Energy Costs Pose Major Challenge for Construction Industry

The construction industry is grappling with soaring energy costs, which are adding significant financial strain to projects across the UK. With energy-intensive processes central to construction—such as material production, machinery operation, and site management—businesses are finding themselves facing difficult decisions to manage increased costs.

Energy prices, already volatile due to global factors, are predicted to remain a key driver of rising construction costs throughout 2025. The issue is compounded by ongoing supply chain disruptions and material price inflation, which are contributing to a perfect storm of cost challenges.

Energy Costs: A Growing Burden for Construction

Energy is a major component of construction costs. From powering machinery on site to the production and transportation of materials, energy usage makes up a large portion of the overall project budget. With global energy prices continuing to fluctuate, construction companies are being forced to decide how to cope: either absorb the rising costs, pass them onto clients, or seek alternative, more sustainable practices that could ease the financial burden.

Catherine Storer, an energy expert at Essential Site Skills Group, highlighted the urgency of addressing this challenge: “Energy costs are forcing businesses to rethink the way they operate. For many, the solution lies in reducing reliance on traditional energy sources and exploring innovative ways to improve efficiency. This approach not only helps control costs but also contributes to a more sustainable future for the industry.”

Sustainable Practices: Turning Challenges into Opportunities

Essential Site Skills, a leading provider of training and support in the construction sector, is helping companies meet this challenge head-on. The group is offering training to help businesses reduce their energy consumption and navigate regulations like the Commercial Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), which can help to lower long-term operational costs.

In addition, the group’s sister brand, Essential Green Skills, is providing expertise in sustainability, helping businesses adopt energy-efficient practices. Catherine Storer added: “By focusing on energy efficiency, companies can turn these challenges into opportunities. The benefits go beyond cost savings; they include enhanced reputation, improved market competitiveness, and better compliance with sustainability regulations.”

Heat Loss Surveys: Tackling Energy Waste

One significant area where construction businesses can cut energy costs is addressing undetected heat loss. Essential Green Skills offers Heat Loss Surveys, which use advanced thermal imaging technology to identify areas of energy inefficiency in buildings, such as poorly insulated walls, roofs, and windows.

“These surveys reveal inefficiencies that are often invisible to the naked eye,” said Storer. “By identifying and fixing these issues, businesses can reduce energy consumption, lower costs, and enhance their sustainability credentials.”

    Future-Proofing the Construction Industry

As energy costs continue to rise, it is clear that sustainability will play an increasingly important role in the construction industry. With government policies pushing for greener infrastructure, construction businesses must adapt to remain competitive. Through services like EPCs and Heat Loss Surveys, Essential Site Skills and Essential Green Skills are helping businesses reduce energy consumption, save money, and prepare for a more sustainable future.

As the industry looks to the future, embracing energy efficiency will be key to surviving and thriving in the face of ongoing cost pressures.
