Duane Davis Tupac murder verdict ends 28-year cold case

Duane Davis Tupac murder verdict

A Las Vegas jury has delivered the Duane Davis Tupac murder verdict, finding the 63-year-old guilty of arranging the 1996 killing of Tupac Shakur, closing one of the most talked-about cold cases in music history. Jurors deliberated for less than three hours before returning the decision.

How the Duane Davis Tupac murder verdict was reached

The origins of the case stretch back to May 1996, when Davis’s nephew, Orlando ‘Baby Lane’ Anderson, allegedly assaulted Trevon ‘Tray’ Lane, an associate of Death Row Records boss Suge Knight, at a shoe store. Months later, on 7 September, following a boxing match at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Shakur led a retaliatory assault on Anderson that was captured by security cameras. Shakur and Knight then left for a local club.

Later that evening, Shakur was shot while sitting in a BMW alongside Knight. He died from his wounds less than a week later.

During closing arguments, Deputy District Attorney Binu Palal said Davis had ‘gone hunting’ for Shakur and Knight in order to seek retribution on behalf of his nephew, according to AP. Davis had long been known to investigators and has admitted in interviews, and in his 2019 memoir Compton Street Legend, that he was present in the car with Shakur’s shooter, though he maintained he did not pull the trigger himself.

In 2023, Davis became the first person to be arrested in direct connection with the killing. He pleaded not guilty to one count of murder with use of a deadly weapon. Since his arrest, he claimed to have fabricated his involvement in Shakur’s murder in order to make money.

Courtroom reaction and what comes next

The moment the verdict was read, Shakur’s sister, Sekyiwa ‘Set’ Shakur, cried and hugged the prosecutors, according to ABC7 New York. It was a scene that captured the weight of what it took to get here: nearly three decades of leads, interviews, memoirs and dead ends before a jury finally delivered an answer.

The trial itself, as CNN reported, began on 10 August, some 30 years after one of the most high-profile unresolved killings in American music history. That it concluded in a guilty verdict, after less than three hours of jury deliberation, says something about the sheer volume of evidence prosecutors had assembled, including Davis’s own words across years of public appearances and a published memoir.

Davis’s sentencing is scheduled for 13 October. He faces the possibility of life in prison.

For anyone who has grown up with Shakur’s catalogue, or simply watched this case loom over hip-hop culture for the better part of three decades, the verdict represents a moment that many had stopped expecting to arrive. The jury took less time to decide than most bands take to finish a soundcheck.
