U2 Shane MacGowan tribute cover arrives ahead of star-studded LP

U2 Shane MacGowan tribute

The U2 Shane MacGowan tribute is gathering real shape: Bono and the Edge have released their cover of the Pogues’ ‘Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah’, the latest preview of 20th Century Paddy: The Songs of Shane MacGowan, due 13 November via Rubyworks.

The track is a 1988 single, and the Edge has written a statement to go with it that reads like something between a eulogy and a love letter. ‘Shane MacGowan was full of contradictions,’ he writes, ‘and that’s where the truth of him lived.’ It’s the kind of framing that cuts through the easy mythology that tends to calcify around figures like MacGowan.

What the Edge actually said

The full statement is worth dwelling on. The Edge describes MacGowan as someone who could be ‘precise about what mattered and gloriously careless about everything else.’ He continues: ‘If that sounds like a kind of performance, maybe it was. But as Oscar Wilde put it, “a mask tells us more than a face.” The crooked grin, the wildness, the old-Ireland inflections, they weren’t disguises so much as signals. A way of placing himself in a lineage that ran from the pub storyteller to the punk stage.’

That’s a better piece of music writing than you get from most dedicated critics. It also positions U2’s contribution not as charity obligation but as genuine engagement with MacGowan’s art and contradictions. Which is exactly what a tribute record should be asking of its contributors.

Who else is on the U2 Shane MacGowan tribute album

The lineup goes well beyond the names in the initial announcement. According to Stereogum, the full roster includes Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Primal Scream, Steve Earle, Dropkick Murphys, Hozier, Jessie Buckley, Johnny Depp, Imelda May, Glen Hansard, David Gray, Damien Dempsey, and Camille O’Sullivan.

Springsteen’s involvement feels particularly loaded. He performed MacGowan’s ‘A Rainy Night In Soho’ in Ireland in 2024, which suggests his contribution here isn’t a cold studio session but something with a bit of prior commitment behind it.

The range of names is doing something interesting. You’ve got American rock royalty sitting alongside Irish traditional-adjacent figures, cult British acts and genuine outsiders. MacGowan’s reach was always broader than the Pogues’ immediate fanbase, and this lineup reflects that without trying too hard to make a point of it.

Half the artist royalties go to Dublin Simon Community

The detail that gives this project its grounding: half of all artist royalties from the album will be donated to Dublin Simon Community, which provides housing and healthcare for people experiencing homelessness. Again per Stereogum, that framing is baked into how the album has been presented to the public from the start.

It’s a thread that connects directly to MacGowan’s own preoccupations. He wrote about dispossession, about the Irish diaspora, about people pushed to the margins of cities they helped build. Routing royalties toward homelessness services in Dublin isn’t a neutral choice. It’s thematically coherent in a way that a lot of tribute projects aren’t.

20th Century Paddy: The Songs of Shane MacGowan is out 13 November on Rubyworks. The Springsteen track, wherever it lands on the tracklist, will be one to watch given his 2024 live form with MacGowan’s material.
