Björk Echolalia Eclipse Rave Draws 7,000 to Iceland Under Totality

Björk Echolalia eclipse rave

The Björk Echolalia eclipse rave landed on 12 August as one of the more extraordinary live events in recent memory: 7,000 people gathered at the Víðistaðatún sculpture park in Hafnarfjörður, Iceland, dancing through a solar eclipse under the open sky while Björk helmed the decks in a balloon gown designed by Robert Wun for his Fall 2026 Couture Collection, glass of white wine in hand.

Echolalia was a one-day festival positioned directly under the path of totality, and Björk’s hour-long DJ set was timed so it overlapped with the precise moment the moon completely obscured the sun, a window that lasted one minute and four seconds. As celestial events go, the backdrop does not get more dramatic than that.

What Björk Played at the Echolalia Eclipse Rave

The set drew from a wide spread of artists. Björk spun tracks by Rosalía, Kelela, and Marina Herlop across the hour, keeping the crowd moving through the eclipse moment itself. According to DJ Mag, her selections included HWXXNG’s ‘Cyber Shamanism’, a track that fits squarely in the experimental, body-music-adjacent territory she has been drawn to for years.

The programme around her set was equally packed. Arca delivered a DJ set, and performances came from 33EMYBW, Loscaballos, and local Icelandic artists Ronja Jóhannsdóttir, Sideproject, Gummi Arnalds, and Knackered. NME also reports that Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith performed at the festival, rounding out a lineup that leaned heavily into the experimental and electronic.

A New Album and the Smekkleysa Anniversary

Echolalia carried extra weight beyond the eclipse. The festival marked the 40th anniversary of Smekkleysa (Bad Taste), the pioneering Icelandic label founded in 1986 by members of the country’s experimental music scene. Smekkleysa has been a foundational institution in Icelandic independent music, and the anniversary gave the event a historical dimension that stretched well beyond a single night of raving under the stars.

For those who made the trip, there was also an exhibition to take in. Björk’s Echolalia show at the National Gallery of Iceland runs through 19 September and features installations inspired by three songs: ‘Sorrowful Soil’ and ‘Ancestress’ from her 2022 album Fossora, plus a piece tied to a song from an as-yet-unannounced forthcoming album. NME notes that the unreleased track ‘Nerve Bloom’ is expected to appear on that next record, which is due in 2027. The exhibition gives fans a rare early glimpse into material that has not been formally announced, filtered through an immersive, installation-based format that has become increasingly central to how Björk frames her work.

The Echolalia concept itself (one festival, one eclipse, one specific geographic window of totality) feels entirely in keeping with an artist who has always treated context as part of the composition. Staging a rave for 7,000 people at the exact coordinates where the sky goes dark, with a lineup that spans experimental electronics and local Icelandic talent, and anchoring it to a label anniversary and a new-album teaser, is the kind of move that makes the whole thing read less like a one-day event and more like a carefully assembled statement. The next album, whenever it formally arrives, now has a very specific moment attached to it: one minute and four seconds of totality above a field in Hafnarfjörður, with 7,000 people already on the dancefloor.
