Hamlet Hail to the Thief London Premiere Set for Barbican This October

Hamlet Hail to the Thief London

Hamlet Hail to the Thief London has a date: the production, which fuses Shakespeare’s tragedy with Radiohead’s politically charged 2003 album, opens at the Barbican on 31 October 2026 and runs through to 23 January 2027, according to Must See Theatre.

The journey to London has been a long one. The production made its world debut at Aviva Studios, home of Factory International, before completing an additional run at the Royal Shakespeare Company. Now it arrives in the capital for the first time, and Thom Yorke is clearly ready for it.

‘I’m into finally bringing Hamlet Hail to the Thief to London, and to the Barbican of all places!’ Yorke wrote in a press release. ‘It is fascinating and very strange to me how this came to life and how it has worked. When it revealed itself to us over time I was shocked, having never had this kind of experience before. I am happy for it to be seen by a wider audience in such an intense space.’

Why Hail to the Thief and Why Now

The choice of album is not arbitrary. Hail to the Thief is Radiohead’s sixth studio album, recorded in the wake of the September 11 attacks and the subsequent War on Terror, as Must See Theatre notes. Its atmosphere of dread, surveillance and political unease sits in uncomfortable proximity to Hamlet’s own world of paranoia, betrayal and a state rotting from within. That overlap is the whole engine of the production.

Yorke has reworked and orchestrated the album’s songs for a cast of 20 musicians and actors. The play is directed and adapted by Christine Jones and Steven Hoggett, and Samuel Blenkin reprises his role as Hamlet with Ami Tredrea returning as Ophelia.

Pitchfork contributor Daniel Dylan Wray, reviewing the production, captured the unlikely alchemy at work: ‘This project really doesn’t have any right to work, or make quite as much sense as it does. But it is an absorbing, heart-racing, and thrilling production that gracefully utilizes this music to co-exist within powerful dramatic depictions of grief, fear, madness, and death.’

A Full Creative Team Behind the Hamlet Hail to the Thief London Run

The London premiere brings with it a substantial creative team. According to StageLync, scenography is by AMP featuring Sadra Tehrani, with arrangements by Justin Levine and music supervision by Tom Brady. Choreography is by Jess Williams, sound design by Gareth Fry, projection design by Will Duke, lighting design by Jessica Hung Han Yun, and costume design by Lisa Duncan.

That is a serious crew, and the combination of Fry’s sound design and Duke’s projection work in a space like the Barbican should be worth the price of a ticket on its own. The Barbican’s scale and its particular kind of controlled intensity, the sort that swallows you whole in the dark, is exactly what Yorke seems to be nodding at when he calls it ‘such an intense space.’

Wray’s review flags grief and paranoia as the thematic hinge points where Shakespeare and Radiohead find each other. Those are not comfortable themes to sit with. They are not supposed to be. Hail to the Thief was a record made under the pressure of a world that felt like it was tipping, and Hamlet is a play about a young man who cannot stop the rot no matter how clearly he sees it. Put them together and you get something that lands differently depending on when you encounter it.

Tickets for Hamlet Hail to the Thief at the Barbican are available for a run stretching across the winter of 2026 into early 2027, giving London audiences a proper stretch of time to catch what Manchester and Stratford-upon-Avon audiences have already been talking about.
