As the world prepares to mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Discovery Education has launched new resources aimed at inspiring the next generation of female STEM innovators. The resources, available through Discovery Education’s award-winning platforms, DoodleMaths, Espresso, and Immersive Learning, are designed to engage primary school pupils in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) learning, while promoting gender equality in these crucial fields.

Celebrated annually on February 11, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science is an initiative adopted by the United Nations General Assembly. The observance aims to promote equal access and participation of women in STEM fields, encouraging the next generation of women scientists, engineers, and innovators.

Now in its tenth year, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science is a timely opportunity for educators to inspire students with the achievements of women in science, both past and present. Discovery Education’s resources are designed to help schools observe this important day and ignite pupils’ natural curiosity for STEM subjects. The new content is closely aligned with the UK National Curriculum for primary schools, ensuring that teachers can integrate it easily into their lessons.

Among the key resources available are:

  • DoodleMaths: This personalised app uses adaptive technology to provide pupils with a tailored programme that helps them build confidence and skills in mathematics. It is designed to boost numeracy, making it easier for children to succeed in maths, a critical component of STEM education.
  • DoodleTables: This interactive app uses fun exercises and games to help children master their times tables, providing a strong foundation in multiplication skills, an essential area of mathematics for STEM learning.
  • Calendar Picks Mini Lessons: These interactive lessons celebrate the achievements of women in science, both historically and in the present day. Through these lessons, pupils will learn about pioneering women scientists and their contributions to various fields.
  • Immersive Learning: This suite of immersive classroom resources includes virtual reality (VR) experiences and virtual field trips that bring STEM learning to life. Discovery Education’s free Sandbox AR app also enables students to experience STEM in an interactive, augmented reality environment.
  • STEM Connect: A comprehensive suite of resources for children from EYFS to KS3, featuring hands-on tasks and challenges that link STEM learning to real-world contexts. The resources are designed to help pupils understand the practical applications of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Lizzy Lambley, Discovery Education’s UK Head of Production, spoke about the company’s commitment to promoting gender equality in STEM. She said, “Discovery Education is proud to support the International Day of Women and Girls in Science by providing teachers with dynamic STEM learning resources that inspire curiosity, build confidence, and accelerate learning. Today’s pupils are tomorrow’s innovators, and our engaging content will prepare young women for exciting STEM careers.”

The new resources are available to schools that subscribe to Discovery Education’s digital learning services. For more information on how to access these resources, visit Discovery Education’s website.
