Rhys was appointed as Head of Live Events in 2017. Prior to this he was Head of Programmes for Radio 1 and 1Xtra for six years.
Rhys, who has over 23 years’ experience in radio production, led and developed BBC Music’s Biggest Weekend in 2018. The Biggest Weekend was the largest live music event the BBC has ever undertaken, and reached a TV audience in excess of 15 million viewers across the weekend.
In addition, Rhys’ team delivered Proms in the Park and Radio 2 Live in Hyde Park in 2017 and 2018, and launched Asian Network Live as an arena show in 2018. The Live Events team also ran the BBC’s biggest arena show to date: 1Xtra Live 2018, held at the O2 Arena with 16,000 attendees.
As Head of Programmes, Rhys was responsible for the editorial content of Radio 1 and Radio 1Xtra, reaching a combined weekly audience of over 11 million. During his time in the role he brought Annie Mac, Alice Levine, Clara Amfo and Yasmin Evans to the networks.
Before this, Rhys was an Executive Producer for Radio 1, working across mainstream and specialist programmes including those fronted by Chris Moyles, Annie Mac, Pete Tong, Zane Lowe and Scott Mills.
