Mastering And Why You Need It

With Christian Wright, Simon Gibson and Alex Gordon

  • Studio Excellence

Abbey Road has been the forefront of mastering for decades, in both technology and expertise. Our award winning engineers will open the doors to their mastering suites and share what it takes to create world-class sound, answer any of your mastering questions and explain how best to prepare for the final stage of the music-making process.

    Christian Wright

Christian joined abbey Road at the age of 19. Starting off in the copy rooms, he graduated to the role of mastering engineer and has since gone on to master award-winning No.1 albums as well as soundtracks to No.1 films from both sides of the Atlantic. Some of the biggest and respected names in music have had their albums mastered by Christian, including Ed Sheeran, Franz Ferdinand, Blur, Soft Hair, Kate Tempest, Bears Den, Keane, and Ben Frost. His skills in soundtrack production have been employed on the Oscar winning Gravity (No.1 in the USA and UK) composed by Steven Price, two Harry Potter films and The Master - composed by Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood.

Christian's musical interests aren't limited to mastering. He still plays live in a band (performing at festivals like Secret Garden Party), records as a multi-instrumentalist, avidly collects analogue gear from synths to outboard, and regularly records and mixes tracks, making him truly involved and helping him understand every aspect of the music creation process.

    Alex Gordon

A lifelong music obsessive, Alex spent his 20s playing in bands, producing music, collecting records and DJing in clubs around the UK. Taking an unusual route into the world of audio engineering, Alex joined Abbey Road in 2004, working in various departments from Video Services to Audio Products, he eventually found himself with the post-production team in 2012 as a transfer engineer becoming adept with analogue tape formats. Although underground club music in its myriad forms is his first love, he maintains a voracious appetite for music of all kinds, from struggling to keep up with the latest rap and R&B mixtapes to digging through obscure 80s Japanese pop, gospel funk, post-punk, avant-garde compositions and everything in between.

    Simon Gibson

Simon has nearly 30 years’ experience at Abbey Road, working in musical genres from rock and pop to symphonic orchestral soundtracks and from contemporary jazz to vocal and choral albums. Equally at home with vintage analogue and cutting-edge digital equipment, he masters both stereo and 5.1 surround projects, and has been involved with many music projects over the years. Simon has mastered the work of some of the world's best known names in pop, rock and classical music, including Paul McCartney and his Under The Staircase Spotify Singles, DVD projects for The Beatles (Yellow Submarine), Take That (Wonderland Tour), U2 as well as soundtracks to many Hollywood blockbusters, including The Hobbit Parts 2 & 3, Into the Woods, Skyfall and The Kings Speech. Translating an artist’s wishes into musical reality always takes a wide variety of skills and a fair amount of patience.
