Over the past two decades Dean Rudland has been one of the most active music consultants within the worlds of soul, funk, reggae and jazz, he has combined this with a continuing career as a DJ. Using the knowledge acquired keeping the dancefloors of the world full, he has produced best selling compilation series for Acid Jazz, Blue Note, Fania, Ace Records others. He has also produced mixes for artists as diverse as Roxy Music and the Fania All Stars.
Dean’s first job in the music industry was working alongside Eddie Piller at Acid Jazz, where they signed The Brand New Heavies and Jamiroquai and defined a musical genre that dominated club and bar culture throughout the 1990s. Dean then began working with Blue Note where his Blue Break Beats series of compilations went on to sell over a million copies. This led to further catalogue work including relaunching Stateside Records for EMI – producing seminal compilations on David Axelrod and Minnie Riperton – and heading up Ace Records’ BGP label. Dean has written award winning sleeve notes, as well as contributing to a number of magazines including Mojo, Q, Uncut, Straight No Chaser and Jazid. His box-set compilation ‘Take Me To The River: A Southern Soul Story’ was awarded The Mojo Magazine Award for best compilation in 2009 and its follow up was made Rough Trade Shops compilation of the year in 2015.
Dean is the Managing Director of Acid Jazz Records, a role which has seen him re-sign the Brand New Heavies, discover new soul artist Laville and work with all-time soul great Leroy Hutson. He is also the owner of Roots Records and A&R consultant for Ace Records and PIAS’s Jazz Village label.
